Nutrition and Digestive Health
Healthy eating
Nutrition and diet are not only at the core of many problems in gastroenterology, but they also contribute to the rapidly-growing public health problems experienced across Europe of obesity, diabetes, vascular disease and the massive burden of multi-morbidity in an aging population.
The ESPCG is planning a major initiative in this area, to draw attention in primary care to the need to include dietary assessment as part of the overall risk assessment of patients with or at risk of developing metabolic or cardiovascular disease. We hope to work with sponsors with interests both in gut health, including the use of probiotics and dietary supplementation, and also in the consequences of poor diet and excessive food intake, including diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, vascular disease and the musculoskeletal consequence of obesity. We also envisage diet and obesity and their consequences as being a topic for research in the future, and for which we will be seeking funding.
