Research

One of the Society’s most valuable pieces of work was a cross-European, comparative survey of the management of common gastrointestinal disorders.

Whilst some variability, due to differences in the structure of health care systems in different countries, was to have been expected, the survey showed a wide variation within, as well as between, countries in the approach to diagnosis and treatment of most of the comment gastrointestinal disorders. This survey emphasised the need for the society to become involved in the generation of clinical guidelines, which has been a major part of its work over recent years. This work has been supported further by the conduct of systematic reviews on the management of irritable bowel syndrome and Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
